UK National Lottery operator the Camelot Group has published its financial
results for the six months leading up to September 24, 2011, showing a record
19.9 per cent rise in year-on-year lottery ticket sales to £3.264 billion,
despite the poor economy.

The lottery operator attributed its glowing financial results to the continued
effectiveness of its long-term responsible growth strategy, which is built on
encouraging lottery fans in the UK to play the lotto each week, while at the
same time spending little.

According to a statement, UK National Lottery sales have been boosted by more
than 20 per cent since Camelot was granted a second lottery license in 2002. The
firm also reported that since then, UK lotto player numbers have risen by five
per cent.

One of the biggest benefactors of Camelot’s impressive results over the years
have been charities and good causes across the UK. Since the National Lottery
launched in 1994, Camelot has paid out over £40 billion to players as prizes and
jackpots, and more than £27 billion to good causes and charities.

In the first six months of this year alone, Camelot paid £918.3 million to good
causes, which is £133.5 million more than over the same period last year. The
lotto operator confirmed that this money went to over 370,000 individual good
causes, which equates to 120 grants for every postcode district in the UK.

Camelot Seen a Positive Start to the Financial Year

Said Camelot CEO Dianne Thompson, ‘We’ve made an extremely positive start to the
2011/12 financial year, raising a record amount for good causes and paying out
record sums in prize money to our players, which is what the National Lottery is
all about.

‘But this success isn’t an overnight phenomenon. It’s the result of
our proven strategy for responsible growth that has seen our sales rise
steadily, and our player numbers increase over the long-term by encouraging many
people to play but to spend relatively small amounts.’

Thompson explained that Camelot’s continued success – despite the UK’s tough
economic climate coupled and a growing global trend of shrinking lottery sales
growth – has bolstered its position as one of the leading national lottery
operators in the world.

‘However, we never take success for granted and are determined to build on
the tremendous performance of the last six months to make sure that we continue
to raise as much money as possible for good causes and create even more
winners,’ said Thompson.
