Canadian Sports Betting Closer to Being Legalized

Despite the fact that Canada has a long and rich gambling heritage, up until now
single-event sports betting has not been legal in the North American nation. But
that may soon change if legislation to legalise the activity is approved by the
Canadian Senate.

Canadian sports betting fans were encouraged this week with the news that the
legislation (Bill C-290), which is designed to open the way for legalized
single-event sports wagering in Canada
, has passed its third reading by
Canada’s political parties in the House of Commons. The next step is to send it
to the Canadian Senate for approval.

Canada’s Provinces Can
Decide on Single-Event Betting

Drawn up by the New Democratic Party representative for the constituency of
Windsor-Tecumseh in Ontario, Joe Comartin, Bill C-290 is designed to alter
Canada’s Criminal Code to allow sports betting fans to bet legally on individual
sports events. It would allow Canada’s provinces to decide for themselves
whether to allow single-event betting or not, and how.

If passed, the new legislation would be particularly welcomed by the Canadian
provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, because they border the United
States. Border towns such as Niagara and Windsor would no doubt attract large
numbers of US sports betting fans, which would not only boost their respective
gaming revenues, but potentially create much-needed jobs.

Said Canadian Gaming Association CEO, Bill Rutsey, ‘We are very encouraged by
the progress made to date as well as the strong support that the bill has
received from all the major parties. We look forward to working with the Senate
as it evaluates the bill in order to reinforce how important it is to provide
Canadians with a legal and regulated product for wagering on individual sporting

Bill C-290 is Widely Supported by Canada’s Political

Rutsey went on to say the fact that Bill C-290 has received such overwhelming
support to date by Canada’s political parties, is very encouraging because it
means they recognise the need to change the current outdated legislation, which
up until now has prevented Canadians from enjoying legalized single-event sports
betting. If the Senate passes the bill, the Criminal Code could be amended
before next year.

‘We remain confident that we will be able to celebrate the
amendment with our industry in the months to come.’ he said.
