There are few issues as contentious in the U.S. as the legalisation of online
, with many states eager to regulate the popular internet activity
not only for the protection of players, but also to reap the benefits from
taxing online gambling revenues.

One of those states is Nevada, home to many of America’s biggest land casinos.
At the recent iGaming North America conference, three Las Vegas-based
panelists admitted that legalising online gambling would greatly benefit their
existing land casino operations.

The panelist in question – Jan Jones of Caesars Entertainment, Doug Dalton of
the Bellagio and Art Manteris of Station Casinos – agreed that legalising and
regulating online gambling would allow them to attract new players and expand
their current business models.

‘The upcoming generation of gambler – the X and Y generations – makes all of
their decisions on the internet,’ said Jones. ‘I believe, if we don’t have a
significant [online] presence, there is the likelihood they will make
entertainment choices that are not gambling choices.’

The rising
number of online gamblers cannot be ignored

The iGaming North America conference also revealed that just over a decade ago a
mere quarter of a million people played online poker, but that today that figure
has risen to a whopping 65 million people and growing all the time, and thus
cannot be ignored any longer.

Another topic of discussion at the conference was the impact of the recent
crackdown on three of the world’s biggest online poker rooms – Full Tilt Poker,
Absolute Poker and Poker Stars – on April 15, which has been named ‘Black
Friday’ by the online gambling industry.

Along with the seizure of those three poker rooms and their respective domains,
the U.S. Department of Justice also issued warrants for the arrest of 11
executives connected to illicit online gambling, three of whom have already
appeared in U.S. courts and been arraigned.

It was the contention of legal experts at the conference that the case against
these executives will likely not be brought to trial on account of the fact that
eight of the 11 accused are based outside of the United States, and will do
everything in their power to prevent extradition.
