If you listen to the cynics in the United Kingdom, they'll tell you that all
the ills of the nation stem from the legalization and regulation of online
gambling a few years ago, as they blame the popular internet activity for
everything from marital problems to a breakdown in morals to a rise in money
laundering.
But the reality is actually quite different. When you remove the emotional
aspect of the pro or anti-online gambling argument, and stick to the cold hard
facts, it's not hard to see that the Government's decision to lead the way by
supporting legalized and regulated online gambling has achieved far more good
than bad.
When Gordon Brown's Government investigated bringing online gambling to the
'right' side of the law, they looked at how the online pastime could add
something to the country as whole and to its citizens. Government officials also
recognized that through regulation, the industry could generate billions of
pounds in taxes.
After numerous studies and reports, the UK Government decided to go ahead and
legalize online gambling, albeit under the strict and tight control of the UK
Gambling Commission. It is these controls that have ensured that only the most
reputable and reliable online gaming firms are able to operate in the UK.
Inversely, this has meant that the less honest and disreputable online gambling
firms have been all but eradicated from the UK, making the online activity far
safer for UK-based online gambling fans. As such, many countries toying with the
idea of regulating their own online gambling industries, use the UK as a
benchmark.
In addition, by legalizing and regulating online gambling, the UK Government has
also helped create much-needed jobs in a country where the rate of unemployment
is on the rise. Online gambling provides jobs ranging from online casino
personal, developers and designers to online moderators and even call centre
staff.
While the UK online gambling industry is not perfect - the Government has been
criticized for its hefty online gambling levies - in contrast to the
American ban on online gambling - which is in violation of the rights and
freedoms of Americans and has spurned a seedy 'online gambling underworld' - it
is vastly superior.
