Each year UK betting fans wager on all manner of things, including which song will become the UK Christmas No 1 single. And this year while it looked to be X Factor winner Joe McElderry with The Climb, established band Rage Against the Machine snagged the # 1 spot with Killing in the Name.

However, it will be McElderry who has the last laugh, as his song beat Rage's to snag the UK New Year's No 1 single. According to reports, up until yesterday (Wednesday, December 30), The Climb has sold a whopping 196,000 copies versus Killing in the Name's 130,000 copies over the last two weeks.

Leading up to Christmas, both land and online UK betting venues did a brisk business with most bets reportedly being placed on Joe McElderry. This was not all that surprising considering that since the inception of the X Factor a few years ago, the winner of each X Factor has grabbed the Christmas No 1 spot.

But this year was different, as long-established Los Angeles rockers Rage Against the Machine snuck in under the radar with their new hit single to send McElderry and his tens of thousands of betting fans packing. But the newly crowned X Factor winner can celebrate his single's recent new year success.

Said an ecstatic McElderry in a recent interview regarding having the UK New Year's No 1 single. 'I am extremely happy that the single is No. 1. Thank you so much to everyone that has supported me - this has been the best Christmas ever and I want to wish everyone a very happy new year.'

Also hyped up with this year's UK Christmas No 1 and UK New Year's No 1 competition was Martin Talbot, MD of the official Charts Company. 'Having secured his own No 1, Joe can top off his year with another honour and has an excellent chance of making the year end top five by next year.'

Leading up to Christmas, meanwhile, Rage Against the Machine reportedly promised their UK fans a free concert to thank them if Killing in the Name was named the UK Christmas No 1 single. So the question UK Rage fans will be asking is where and when Rage will perform their free concert?
