As online betting becomes ever more popular around the globe, so betting fans are looking at a wider range of events to bet on which is why in recent years wagering on the annual Academy Awards or Oscars has become so big, and why top betting sites like Ladbrokes.com are doing such a brisk trade.

The leading online sports betting firm is attracting droves of new members daily as the 2010 Oscars draws near. Thanks to the internet, betting on who will what Oscar has never been easier, and with multitudes of nominees and categories to choose from, there is almost no limit to the number of bets players can make.

Of course, it's no secret that the Oscars are very 'political', meaning there are many factors that dictate who walks away with a priceless gold statuettes. If it were down to sheer talent or box office proceeds alone, the winners might be easier to pick, but there are many subversive factors at play that sway the results.

For instance, it has come to light that movie studios that spend small fortunes 'lobbying' the almost 6,000 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters have a greater shot of winning, as do actors who play mentally or physically disabled characters, as well as actors that have been passed over many times.

While no doubt the Academy would deny such goings on, they are accepted as part and parcel of the Oscars. Which in a way probably makes wagering on their outcome that much more interesting and exciting. One reported 'shoe in' for Oscar glory this year is veteran actor Jeff Bridges for his role in Crazy Heart.

Not only has Bridges never won an Oscar before despite being nominated four times before (one point in his favor), but he may not be around long enough to be nominated for another Oscar (another point in his favor). Add to that the fact he plays the kind of American anti-hero Hollywood loves (and another).

So it's not surprising that Ladbrokes.com has installed Bridges as the overwhelming 1/8 favorite to win for Best Actor. Another contender that will be well-backed in that category is George Clooney (9/1) for his role in Up in the Air. However, his cockiness will no doubt give way to Bridge's moth-eaten likeability.

Here are a range of Oscar odds as laid by Ladbrokes.com:
