Even though participation in illegal online gambling has almost doubled in
in the last five years, the number of problem gamblers in the nation
has dropped considerably, according to a new report from the country’s Ministry
of Justice.

The Dutch Ministry of Justice’s Research and Documentation Centre requested that
a report be compiled with regards to gambling, online gambling and problem
gambling in Holland, which contains data collected and collated in 2011.

The last report on this subject was published in 2005, which is why the Dutch
government wanted to gain an insight into the current status of gambling within
its borders. The 2011 gambling study included data from a survey of 6000 Dutch
citizens aged 16 and over, in-depth interviews of 500 regular gamblers, and
talks with a host of gambling experts.

The Number of Dutch Problem Gamblers is Down

One of the most interesting facts revealed by the 2011 Dutch gambling study is
the fact that while more Dutch gamblers are playing at online gambling sites
than ever before, the number of problem gamblers in the Western European nation
have decreased.

According to the report, out of the approximately 8.7 million recreational
gamblers in Holland last year, 20,300 were found to be problem gamblers. While
these figures may appear to be high, the number of problem gamblers has fallen
by a notable 29 per cent compared with the numbers published in the 2005 Dutch
gambling report.

However, when it comes to at risk Dutch gamblers, the 2011 report recorded an
increase of 67 per cent compared to 2005. The latest report also revealed that
participation in most other forms of gambling – other than online gambling – has
also dropped considerably over the last few years.

Dutch Lottery Players Have Dropped to 71.9% from 76%

For instance, lottery players dropped to 71.9 per cent in 2011 from 76 per cent
in 2005, scratchcard players dropped to 29.7 per cent from 31 per cent, gaming
machine players dropped to 29 per cent from 35.2 per cent, casino players
dropped to 23.7 per cent from 23.4 per cent, and sports bettors dropped to 4.4
per cent from 3.1 per cent.

The main reasons for the decrease in land-based
gambling in Holland include the smoking ban, which forced smokers out of many
once smoking-friendly gambling establishments, the ongoing economic downturn,
and of course the advent of a multitude of convenient Dutch-friendly online
gambling destinations.

In terms of online gambling growth in Holland, the report showed that last
year 257,500 Dutch citizens gambled online compared with 130,500 in 2005. In
addition, 3.3 per cent of all Dutch citizens have reportedly gambled on the
internet at least once in their lifetime, compared with 1.4 per cent in 2005.
