Irish land and online gambling operator Paddy Power could become the first
European online gambling firm to be granted a coveted Nevada gaming license,
Nevada being the U.S. state that is home to the popular gambling cities of Las
Vegas and Reno.

Paddy Power, which is something of a ‘gambling giant’ in Ireland and the UK,
applied for a Nevada gaming license in August last year, and the firm’s
executives are hoping the Nevada Gaming Control Board (GCB) will approve their
application by November this year.

Although Paddy Power is not the first European gambling firm to set its sights
firmly on America’s ‘gambling Mecca’, as more than a few large gambling firms
have been ‘wheeling and dealing’ over the past few months to secure a foothold
in the U.S. gambling market.

William Hill, for instance, has acquired various Nevada mobile and land sports
betting operations, while 888 Holdings has been given the green light to partner
with Caesars Entertainment, which owns and operates over 50 casinos, including
the legendary Caesars Palace.

Paddy Power Looking to Offer Mobile Gaming Devices

But while these firms are seeking to buy or ‘piggy back’ on existing U.S.
gambling companies, Paddy Power is looking for a Nevada gaming license as an
operator and manufacturer of mobile gaming devices.

‘The method of applying
for the manufacturer and distributors license has been used in the past by
people who want to pass probity to then allow them to consider a broad number of
options,’ explained Paddy Power COO, Breon Corcoran.

Corcoran and co understand that as the GCB continues towards the finalization
of regulations for an interstate online poker network, having a Nevada gaming
license – if and when the network is given the thumbs up – would put Paddy Power
in an ideal position to capitalise on the ‘online poker rush.’

A license would make it easier for Paddy Power to be granted permission to
launch and operate a Nevada-hosted online poker room.

The reason Paddy Power has such a good chance of having its Nevada gaming
license approved is that unlike many of its rivals, the Irish gambling firm has
never accepted wagers from American players. And because of this, it has avoided
the attentions of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which has gone after
many gaming firms and their executives that targeted the American market in the
past.
