This week saw the official launch of the Responsible Gambling Trust at
Aspers Westfield Stratford City in London, a charitable organisation aimed at
combating and treating problem gambling in the UK.

The Responsible Gambling Trust is the result of a merger between the Gambling,
Research, Education and Treatment (GREaT) Foundation and the Responsible
Gambling Fund, and will take over their respective commissioning and fundraising
functions.

Said the Responsible Gambling Trust CEO, Marc Etches, ‘We will work hard to
ensure that the gambling industry in Britain retains its world-leading
reputation for promoting responsibility in gambling and to demonstrate that
legitimate business growth and job creation is balanced with social protection
of the weak and vulnerable in society.’

Funds Raised from the UK Gambling Industry

Etches explained that the reason for the merger was to streamline the process of
raising funds from the UK gambling industry and the distribution thereof, in
order to reduce the levels of problem gambling and facilitate the quick and
effective treatment of UK problem gamblers using effective prevention and
education techniques.

As such, the Responsible Gambling Trust is aiming to raise no less than £5
million a year from the UK gambling industry via a system based on donations,
which will be used to fund its problem gambling treatments, education and
research.

Said Responsible Gambling Trust Board of Trustees Chairman, Neil Goulden, ‘We
will commission effective and value for money services from treatment and
education providers and will deliver an independently commissioned research
programme that focuses on the causes of problem gambling and the effectiveness
of various treatment, prevention and education techniques in preventing and/or
reducing problem gambling.

Trust must be Trustworthy and Credible

‘It is very important that the Responsible Gambling Trust generates widespread
trust and credibility, particularly in view of the investment of both
fundraising and commissioning functions in a single industry-led body,’ he
continued. ‘And to that end, we will ensure an appropriate balance between
industry and independent trustees and invite both the Gambling Commission and
the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board to observe our board meetings.’

Also
joining the Responsible Gambling Trust Board of Trustees will be former Labour
Government Minister Gerry Sutcliffe and Professor Jonathan Wolff, who was a
previous member of the Gambling Review Body. The Board has endeavoured to make
the Trust an ‘independent, authoritative and respected voice for responsible
gambling in Britain.’

Said Gambling Commission Chairman, Philip Graf, ‘The Gambling Commission
welcomes these new arrangements; a renewed approach of openness and transparency
to help fill the evidence gaps and ensure that we do all we can to minimise the
harm from gambling through evidence-based regulation and an effective programme
of research, education and treatment.’
