Do you bet on black and let it ride?
Do you bet on black and let it ride?

Roulette has to be the best known casino gambling game in the world, with its
large green numbered table and trademark spinning wheel. Roulette, which is
derived from the French word meaning ‘wheel’, originated in France in the 18th
century. Since then it has been enjoyed by literally billions of people in land
casinos all over the world, and now also by millions of people in online
casinos.

It is an easy game to understand and to play, and one that will probably be
around for centuries to come. While there are a  few different versions of
roulette, the most common two variations are European Roulette and American
Roulette. The difference between these two games is European Roulette has a
single zero, while American Roulette boasts a single and a double zero.

But to start at the beginning, we have compiled easy-to-follow roulette rules
for your convenience. Whether playing in a land casino or an online casino,
you’ll find the roulette table identical in appearance, including the wheel
which is completely random. A European roulette table is numbered from 0 (zero)
to 36, and has various other bet types that you can wager including Black or
White; Odds and Evens; 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12; 2 to 1; 1 to 18; 19 to 36 and
more.

The game’s premise is simple. The dealer will say ‘place your bets’ at which
time you can bet as much as you want (up to the limit of the particular roulette
table you are playing on) on any number of bets you want. Once you’ve finished
betting, click the ‘Spin’ button to activate the wheel, which spins in an
anti-clockwise direction. The little white ball is added and spun in a clockwise
direction and number and colour the ball lands on will dictate whether you win
or lose.

Here is an explanation of all the possible bets in roulette:

Straight Up Bet – This is a bet on 1 number from 0 to 36. It pays 35 to
1.

Split Bet – This is a bet on the line that splits 2 numbers. You can
wager the Straight Up Bet maximum x 2 for this bet. It pays 17 to 1.

Street Bet –  This is a bet that covers 3 numbers. Place a chip on the
boundary line of the table, at the end of the corresponding row. You can wager
the Straight Up Bet maximum x 3 for this bet. It pays 11 to 1.

Corner Bet –  This is a bet on the corner of 4 numbers. You can wager the
Straight Up Bet maximum x 4 for this bet. It pays 8 to 1.

Four Bet – This is a bet on the boundary line of 0, 1, 2 and 3. You can
wager the Straight Up Bet maximum x 4 for this bet. It pays 8 to 1.

Line Bet – This is a bet that covers 6 numbers. Place a chip on the
intersection of two boundary lines of the table, in between the corresponding
rows. You can wager the Straight Up Bet maximum x 6 for this bet. It pays 5 to
1.

Column Bet – This is a bet that covers any of the 3 boxes marked ‘2 to 1’
on the roulette table. You can wager the Straight Up Bet maximum x 10 for this
bet. It pays 2 to 1. Note that zero is a losing number with this bet.

Dozen Bet – This is a bet that covers any of the 3 groups of 12 numbers,
i.e. 1 to 12, 13 to 24, 25 to 36. You can wager the Straight Up Bet maximum x 10
for this bet. It pays 2 to 1. Note that zero is a losing number with this bet.

Red/Black, Even/Odd, Low/High Bets – With their names self-explanatory,
these are bets that each cover 18 numbers (half the table). You can wager the
Straight Up Bet maximum x 20 for this bet. It pays 1 to 1.

With the roulette rules and roulette bets dealt with, let’s move on to roulette
strategy. Now, it is important to understand that a roulette wheel is completely
random, which means the same number has just as much chance of coming up three
times in a row as not. The point is that it is impossible to predict the numbers
in roulette. However, this does not mean that thousands of players over the
years have not tried to formulate roulette tactics and strategies.
