Gambling In Slovenia
When Slovenia was still part of the Soviet Union, all forms of gambling were strictly prohibited. However, with the break up of the Soviet Union in the
late 1980s that began to change, and in the early 1990s casinos and gambling halls mushroomed across the country unchecked. However, in 1995 the Slovenian
government passed the Gambling Act in order to regulate and control gambling.
From then until now, gambling continues to be a highly popular pastime in Slovenia, with a multitude of land casinos, sports betting outlets and even a
national lottery. Interestingly, a large percentage of Slovenia’s gambling revenues are generated by foreign gamblers, particularly those from neigbouring
Italy, who regularly cross the border to use its gambling facilities.
Online Gambling In Slovenia
That is not the case with online gambling, however, as Slovenia’s Gambling Act makes no allowances for online gambling. In 2006 the Slovenian government
instructed the country’s Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block people from accessing offshore online gambling sites. But proving too difficult to
enforce on a national level, most Slovenian ISPs failed to comply, and today Slovenian online gamblers can readily access foreign gambling sites – without
threat from the government.
However, few online casinos offer Slovene language versions, but as long as players are willing to gamble in other languages, there are sites where they
are welcome. Many of these sites allow Slovenian players to deposit playing funds using
credit and debit cards,
Moneybookers,
ClickandBuy,
Ukash,
Ecocard,
Paysafecard, Ezipay,
Neteller,
Entropay and
Click2Pay.
