Frank Says Legalised U.S. Online Gambling Unlikely Soon

For the last few years, hope that the U.S. government will reverse its draconian online gambling ban has rested largely with Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass), however he delivered some bad news this week.

Despite hope from proponents of online gambling that the popular multi-billion dollar activity had a better than good chance of being legalised in 2010, Frank delivered a bombshell earlier this week in the form of a statement.

In it Frank said that while he wanted to see a floor vote on the [pro online gambling] legislation, it was unlikely to clear the House floor before the midterm elections, which means likely going on the back burner until 2011.

And even though Frank has reportedly talked to Democratic members of the Senate about moving a similar online gambling bill to the other chamber of Congress, up until now there’s been no confirmation that this will happen.

Any hope that Frank’s bill will see light of day this year rests with the possibility that the bill could be added to another bill, related to taxes or job creation, during the lame-duck session following the upcoming elections.

Another issue facing HR 2267 is the fact that HR 2268, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act, has not seen any movement in the House of Representatives, a bill sponsored by Jim McDermott (D-Wash).

Just one month ago, hopes were high that Frank’s bill would be passed on its own, but in another of a very long line of disappointments, the legalisation and regulation of online gambling in America has taken another backseat.
