Barney Frank is the only U.S. Congressmen that has championed the legalization and regulation of online gambling in the United States, and today (Tuesday, July 27) he will yet again go before House Finance Committee.

Frank (D-Mass.) is scheduled to present his HR 2267, Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, to the House Finance Committee in what is known as the ‘markup’ phase of the process.

The Congressman currently has sixty-nine co-sponsors for his bill. Since 2006 Frank has attempted to have the U.S. online gambling ban overturned, but with little success. However, he now has more support than ever and it’s growing.

Supporters of a legalized and regulated online gambling industry in the U.S. will be waiting on tenterhooks for feedback from the House Finance Committee, because it can pave the way to open up the popular internet activity.

Particularly eager to hear how what the Committee has to say are online poker operators and fans, because one of the issues reportedly on today’s agenda is whether to issue licenses for existing online poker rooms or not.

Two such online poker rooms include Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars, both of which have continued to accept American players despite the U.S. government’s online gambling ban that was born in 2006 with the passing of UIGEA.

But even if House Finance Committee was to agree to issue licenses to existing poker rooms, some U.S. lawmakers have already indicated that they would like to see these two poker rooms denied licenses for ‘flouting’ U.S. laws.

Said Representative Brad Sherman, ‘These entities [Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars] should not be invited to play a role where they are going to have to act as policemen. We don’t want former criminals deputized as cops.’
