In a move to help combat UK problem gambling, the Gambling, Research, Education
and Treatment (GREaT) Foundation has signed a three-year partnership deal with
registered problem gambling charity GamCare, which will see the former fund a
national problem gambling helpline.

In addition, GREaT has revealed that it will pay for GamCare’s treatment and
counselling services until the end of March next year, at which time the two
organisations will seek to take their partnership to a new level. The GamCare
GREaT agreements is expected to help combat UK problem gambling

Up until a few months ago, GREaT was partnered with the Responsible Gambling
Fund (RGF). However, at the end of August the organisations decided to part
ways. But when they worked together, the RGF earmarked funds generated by GREaT
for the treatment and research of problem gambling in the UK, and initiated
plans for a national gambling helpline.

Said GamCare chairman, Anthony Jennens, ‘We are very impressed by the speed with
which the GREaT Foundation has picked up the baton passed to them only last
month by the RGF. Our new partnership with the GREaT Foundation will serve the
interests of all those gamblers and non-gamblers [in the United Kingdom] who our
services are designed to help.’

‘We look forward to a long and constructive partnership that will continue to
put the interests of those who need our help at the top of our joint
priorities,’ he said.

UK National Gambling Helpline Launch

Also pleased with the tie up is GamCare CEO Andy McLellan, who alluded to the
fact that his organisation’s three-year partnership with GREaT would at last put
reliable and regular funding in place for the launch of a much-needed national
gambling helpline, which was recommended by the UK Gambling Commission in 2009.

‘We also look forward to agreeing a similar three-year contract for delivering
treatment services from April of 2012 allowing us to develop and expand our
existing counselling network to cover the whole country,’ explained McLellan.
‘This security of funding is vital to allow better and more cost-effective
medium-term planning and evaluation.

‘As well as trialling a freephone service, we will also be able to introduce
dedicated services for under-16s, non-English speakers and partners and other
family members,’ he continued. ‘We can also experiment with new approaches to
make more use of the skills and expertise of our helpline advisers to help
people earlier and develop our use of social media to reach new audiences.’
