Global Lottery Sales Up In 2011

According to the World Lottery Association (WLA), global lottery sales in
were up by 13 per cent compared with the previous year, which can
mainly be attributed to a massive growth in lottery sales in the Asia-Pacific

The rise in lottery sales globally in 2011 is interesting because the
figures show that despite the harsh economic climate affecting many nations as a
direct result of the world financial crises over the past few years, lottery
sales have risen in most parts of the world, particularly in Asia.

The World Lottery Association revealed that in 2011 lottery sales across the
Asia-Pacific region grew by a notable 18.9 per cent, which has been attributed
to the increasing popularity of lottery draws in China. While gambling was once
highly restricted in China, the government has since recognised the financial
benefits for the state of running lotteries.

Latin America a Lottery ‘Hot Spot’ in 2011

Another lottery ‘hot spot’ identified by the WLA in 2011 was Latin America, with
a total lottery sales increase across the South American continent and beyond,
of 15.7 per cent compared with the previous year. Notably, Argentina saw a
tremendous boost in its lottery sales for 2011 through its state-run lottery,
Loteria Nacional Sociedad Del Estado.

In terms of overall lottery sales in
Europe, 2011 was also a good year in general. The WLA reported that average
lottery sales in Europe rose by 10.7 per cent last year compared to 2010. This
hike in European lottery sales is thought to stem from the fact that many people
in Europe experiencing financial difficulties have turned to the lottery in an
effort to solve their financial problems.

Particularly notable in terms of 2011 European lottery sales is leading
Italian lottery operator Lottomatica S.p.A., which over the period showed strong
growth. This is probably to be expected considering Lottomatica is the world’s
largest lottery operator, and a firm involved in various other gaming services.

2011 European Lottery Market Performed Well

Read a statement from WLA: ‘The European market performed vigorously also,
recording double-digit growth in the second-half of 2011 versus the second-half
of 2010. The robust state of global lottery sales coming into 2012 projects an
optimistic outlook for global sales of lottery products throughout 2012.’

while North American lottery sales did increase in 2011, the increase of only
6.2 per cent year-on-year was noticeably less than in Asia Pacific, Latin
America and Europe. That said, the increase in lottery sales in North America
was at least consistent throughout the year.

However, one place in the world where lottery sales dropped in 2011 was in
Africa. The WLA revealed that average sales across the continent fell by 0.5 per
cent compared to 2010. Even though African lottery sales improved in the latter
half of 2011, they were off-set by poor first quarter sales.
