U.S. Mid Term Elections Could Set Back Online Gambling

America’s online gambling ban was initiated by George W. Bush’s Republican administration, so when Barack Obama Democratic administration took over, there was hope the ban would be repealed.

However, to date Obama’s administration has done little to reverse the online gambling ban, and in fact the results of today’s all-important mid term elections could set the online gambling cause back even further.

The reason is Obama’s lack of popularity amongst the majority of Americans, many of whom are expected to express their dissatisfaction by casting a protest vote against the incumbent president in today’s elections.

This could allow the Republicans to form a majority in the House of Representatives, and thus regain the power needed to once more quash any plans for the future legalisation and regulation of online gambling.

If this happens it would be massive blow for online gamblers in the United States – many of whom have been forced to gamble illegally at offshore online gambling sites – as well as the world’s online gambling operators.

Until now Congressman Barney Frank has been online gambling’s ‘White Knight’. His HR 2267 bill proposes a regulatory framework to protect players and generate $42 billion in tax revenues over the next decade.

However, the future of Frank’s bill is dependent on support within the House of Representatives, mainly from Democrats. Which is why proponents of online gambling will be watching the election results very carefully
